Development and comparative evaluation of radiation-based reference evapotranspiration equations for sub-humid Hazaribagh region of Jharkhand CIGR Journal
ARVIND SINGH TOMAR; GBPUAT, PANTNAGAR.
In this study, two site-specific solar radiation (Rs) and net radiation (Rn) based equations for estimating reference evapotranspiration (ET0) were developed and their performance were statistically analysed in comparison to widely accepted FAO Penman-Monteith method (PMF-56) and four other standard radiation methods for sub-humid Hazaribagh region of Jharkhand. These two equations were developed with daily values of Rs and Rn in conjunction with maximum and minimum air temperature by taking daily PMF-56 ET0 values as index with weather dataset of 15 years (1990-2004). The performance of these equations validated with carefully screened daily weather dataset of eight years (2005-2012) with other considered standard methods revealed that they estimated ET0...

Emerging Markets for GM Foods: A Study of Consumer's Willingness to Pay in India AgEcon
Deodhar, Satish Y.; Ganesh, Sankar; Chern, Wen S..
A random utility approach is used to estimate logit equations which indicate what factors affect the likelihood of consumption of non-GM and GM foods, and, whether or not consumers are willing to pay a premium for non-GM/GM foods. Ceteris paribus as the price difference between non-GM and GM food rose, people were more likely to consume GM foods. Likelihood of GM food consumption was higher in the middle income brackets. Consumers were willing to pay an expected premium of 19.5% and 16.12% for golden rice and GM edible oil respectively. In case of chicken, consumers seemed to pay a very negligible premium for non-GM fed chicken. Overall, it appears that GM foods may be acceptable in the Indian market. However, basic awareness about the GM foods may...

Grader: A review of different methods of grading for fruits and vegetables CIGR Journal
Londhe, Dattatraya Hiraman; Nalawade, Sachin Madhukar; Pawar, Ganesh Shyamrao; Atkari, Vinod Tukaram; Wandkar, Sachin Vilas.
Grading of agricultural produce especially the fruits and vegetables has become a perquisite of trading across borders.  In India mostly fruit growers grade the fruit manually.  Manual grading was carried out by trained operators who considered a number of grading factors and fruit were separated according to their physical quality.  Manually grading was costly and grading operation was affected due to shortage of labor in peak seasons.  Human operations may be inconsistent, less efficient and time consuming.  New trends in marketing as specified by World Trade Organization (WTO) demand high quality graded products.  Farmers are looking forward to having an appropriate agricultural produce-grading machine in order to alleviate the labor shortage, save time...

Physiological and perceptual responses during Sherpa mode of load carriage: Role of hip and shoulder belt supports CIGR Journal
Patel, Thaneswer.
In the Northeastern hilly region of India, manual load carrying system is still widespread due to lack of transportation infrastructure. It is not uncommon to see men and women routinely carry head-supported loads like Sherpa mode where a load slung on the back and supported by a strap around the forehead. This type of load carriage has been shown to cause significant postural discomforts, mainly on head, neck and shoulders. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to examine effects of hip belt and shoulder straps on Sherpa mode of load carriage for assessment of physiological and perceptual responses. It was hypothesized that the support on hip belt and shoulder straps supported in Sherpa mode would elicit lower physiological and perceptual responses...
